Biography

Teacher and writer, Alana Lentin is a Jewish European woman who is a settler on Gadigal-Wangal land. She joined the School of Humanities and Communication Arts in 2012 after six years at the Department of Sociology at the University of Sussex, UK and is currenrtly Professor of Cultural and Social Analysis.

In 2017, she was the Hans Speier Visiting Professor of Sociology at The New School.

Alana Lentin works on the critical theorization of race, racism and antiracism. Her latest book is Why Race Still Matters (Polity 2020) and she previously published The Crises of Multiculturalism: Racism in a neoliberal age with Gavan Titley (Zed, 2011), Racism and Ethnic Discrimination (2011); Racism (2008); The Politics of Diversity in Europe (with Gavan Titley, 2008); Race and State (with Ronit Lentin, 2006, 2008); Racism and Anti-racism in Europe (2004). She also publishes extensively in journals such as the Ethnic and Racial Studies, European Journal of Social Theory, the European Journal of Cultural Studies, and Patterns of Prejudice.

She co-edits the Rowman & Littlefield ‘Challenging Migration Studies’ books series and the ‘Decolonization and Social Worlds’ series at Bristol University Press. She is an editorial board member of Ethnic and Racial Studies and Identities among other journals.

She has contributed to The Guardian, OpenDemocracy, The Sociological Review, Eurozine, The Sydney Review of Books, the ABC, SBS, and others.

Alana is curently writing her fifth monograph which puts the so-called War on Critical Race Theory from the perspective of Cedric Robinson's conceptualsiation of racial capitalism and rthe racial regime. The book will be published by Pluto Press in 2024.
