Biography

Professor Peter Hutchings is the Dean of the School of Humanities and Communication Arts. His research interests are in arts, cinema, critical legal studies, literature, and philosophy. His publications have appeared in local and international refereed journals as well as in the mainstream print media, and he is the author of The Criminal Spectre in Law, Literature and Aesthetics: Incriminating Subjects (London & New York: Routledge, 2001). Currently, he is researching issues of sovereignty and cinema in the post-9/11 period.

He has held a number of senior positions at Western Sydney University:  Head of School of Humanities and Languages (2010–11), Associate Dean (Academic) for the College of Arts (2001-2008), Head of School of Humanities (1997–2002) and Chair of the College Board of Studies (2002-2008), as well serving on the UWS Academic Senate. Between 2008 and 2010, he worked in the position of General Manager, Programs and Engagement, for the Australian Learning and Teaching Council, with responsibility for the development of the ALTC’s grants, awards, and fellowships. Previously, he has worked at The University of Sydney, the University of Hong Kong and in the Boston University Sydney program.  He was also a Board Member of TVS up until it ceased operations at the end of 2015.

Professor Hutchings has a First Class Honours degree in Arts (University of Sydney, 1983) and a PhD (University of Sydney, 1990), and is a Graduate of the Australian Institute of Company Directors (2013).  He is a non-executive Board Member of FORM Dance Projects.
