Doctor Thilla Rajaretnam

Biography

Thilla Rajaretnam is a Lecturer at the School of Law and has international teaching experience in Business Law having taught at the University Sains Malaysia and Massey University in New Zealand.

Before commencing her academic career, Thilla worked as a legal practitioner in Malaysia after being admitted as an Advocate and Solicitor in the High Court in Malaya, Malaysia in 2000.  She was admitted as a legal practitioner in the Supreme Court of New South Wales, Australia in 2004. 

Thilla specialises in information privacy and data security research, corporate information governance and corporate governance law and regulation.  Thilla has completed a thesis entitled, 'The Regulation of Information Privacy Protection in Electronic Commerce (E-commerce) in Australia'. Her other research interests include human rights law, banking and financial transaction law and regulation.  She has published a book entitled, Information Privacy Governance and Regulation in Australia: An E-commerce Perspective, Publisher, LexisNexis Australia (2022).

Thilla was a participant at the UN Special Rapporteur on the Right to Privacy (SRP) - Big-Data - Open Data Consultation on the 26 - 27th July 2018 in Sydney, Australia (2018),  the Workshop on the Right to Privacy under the auspices of Professor Joseph A. Cannataci, the United Nations Special Rapporteur on Privacy (SRP) in partnership with the Security, Technology & e-Privacy Research Group (STeP) at the University of Groningen in the Netherlands, the Department of Information Policy and Governance of the University of Malta, and the MAPPING Project (Managing Alternatives for Privacy, Property and Internet Governance) held in Hong Kong, China ( 29 - 30 September 2017). She has also participated at the Privacy Law & Business Conference - EU Data Protection Regulation: Time to Get Organised in the UK or The Great Escape?’ held at St John’s College, Cambridge, UK, (28 September 2016).

Thilla also presented Lecture Series on Cyber Security and Cyber Crime Principles and Law, International Centre for Ocean Governance (ICOG), Western Sydney University & the Law & Justice Division of the Ministry of Law, Justice & Parliamentary Affairs, Bangladesh, Capacity Building of Law Justice Division for Strengthening Subordinate Judiciary Management Project (March 2017 – November 2019).

At Western Sydney University, she has been a  Badugulang Fellow since October 2021, and a  Committee Member of the Parramatta Campus, Early Career Researchers and Mid-Career Member, Researchers Advisory Working Group, (June 2018 – present). She was a Committee Member of the WSU, Working Group, Our People Securing Success (OPSS) (May–October 2019). She was part of the organising team for ECR-MCR Advisory Working Group Event, Protect Your Research Time’ on 29 November 2019.

 She is currently a Senior Fellow of the Higher Education Academy, UK, (SFHEA) (12 June 2019 - present), a Research Fellow at the Law Faculty and an Academic Peer of the Universiti Airlangga - Surabaya, 60115, East Java, Indonesia (2020 – present), a Research Fellow at the Law Faculty, University Malaya, Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia and a Research Fellow at the University of Padjadjaran, Bandung, Indonesia since 2023 - present).

Research Interests

 Thilla’s research interests include issues related to:

  • Commercial and corporate law and regulation from a corporate perspective.
  • Human Right Law from a privacy and information governance perspective.
  • Cyber Security Law.
  • Cyber Law and cybercrimes.
  • Maritime and marine data security related to Automatic Identification System (AIS) and Maritime Safety and Security Information System (MSSIS).  

Research Activities

She has participated and presented at the Western Sydney University, School of Law, Research Seminars. She actively participates in national and international conferences and seminars and has presented her research papers at both national and international conferences, workshops.

A significant impact of her research activities and her membership with Asia-Pacific Privacy Scholars Network (APSN) is that, Thilla was invited by Professor Joseph A. Cannataci , the Special Rapporteur on the right to privacy to participate in a workshop conference organised under the auspices of the mandate of the United Nations Special Rapporteur on Privacy (SRP) in partnership with the Security, Technology & e-Privacy Research Group (STeP) at the University of Groningen in the Netherlands, the Department of Information Policy and Governance of the University of Malta, and the MAPPING Project (Managing Alternatives for Privacy, Property and Internet Governance) held in Hong Kong, China between the 29th and 30th of September 2017.  

In 2018, she attended the Human Rights and Technology Conference held by the Australian Human Rights Commission on the 24th July 2018; and the UN Special Rapporteur on the Right to Privacy (SRP) -  Big-Data - Open Data Consultation on the 26 - 27th July 2018 in Sydney, Australia.
