Biography

Dr Karena de Perthuis is a Senior Lecturer in design and visual communications in the School of Humanities and Communication Arts. She previously taught in the Fashion and Textile Programme in the Faculty of Design, Architecture & Building at UTS and in the School of Art History & Theory at UNSW Art & Design. She has an interdisciplinary expertise across visual culture, media studies and cultural studies with research interests focused in fashion theory and practice. Her work at the intersection of fashion, media and the body has been published widely and is grounded in twenty years practice as a costume designer and stylist in the film, music and advertising industries. She is currently working on a monograph, The Fashionable Ideal: Undoing Bodies and Images in Fashion, which will be published with Bloomsbury.

Karena has been invited to present her research in Sydney, Adelaide, Copenhagen and Shanghai. She is co-editor-in-chief of the International Journal of Fashion Studies and on the Advisory Board of Fashion & Performance at Olle Engkvist Stiftelse, Sweden.
