Biography

Edward read in the areas of economics (social science), psychology and philosophy at the University of Sydney. In 1995, he was awarded a Bachelor of Arts degree (double major in economics and psychology) with First Class Honours (Division 1) in Economics (social science). He was also awarded the University Medal. 

Prior to being appointed a tenured academic in economics at Western Sydney University, he tutored in political sociology at the University of NSW and economics at Western Sydney University. He currently teaches in the areas of principles of economics and microeconomics at the undergraduate level, and critical thinking at the postgraduate level. In the past, he has taught economic methodology, political economy, and history of economic thought.

Edward's research focuses on the philosophy of science, economic methodology and its history, the conceptual foundations of economics, and the intersection of political philosophy and economic analysis. He has published scholarly peer-reviewed articles in Oxford Economic Papers, Journal of Economic Methodology, Journal of Australian Political Economy, Economic and Labour Relations Review, International Journal of Applied Economics and Econometrics, On The Horizon, Australasian Journal of Economics Education, and Erasmus Journal for Philosophy and Economics.His doctoral thesis, Opacity and Rhetoric: An Exegetical Analysis of Milton Friedman’s "The Methodology of Positive Economics" (University of Sydney), was joint winner of the HETSA: History of Economic Thought Society of Australia Award for Best Dissertation in 2013.

Edward's general area of research interest is economic methodology and the philosophy of science. His particular specialisation is the debates surrounding realism and instrumentalism in economics, with special attention given to the influential work of Milton Friedman. Concomitantly, he is interested in the history of economic thought, and its recent developments such as behavioural economics and Islamic economics.
