Doctor Dariush Izadi

Associate Lecturer in TESOL/Linguistics,
Languages, Linguistics, I&T, TESOL

Biography

I hold a PhD in Linguistic Anthropology, focusing on the intricate relationship between language practices and cultural phenomena, particularly within markets and corner shops. My research delves into how everyday interactions shape and are shaped by cultural norms, drawing from a multidisciplinary approach that encompasses linguistics, semiotics, social theory, ethnography, ethnomethodology, politics, history, and media studies.

Informed by Mediated Discourse Analysis and Nexus Analysis, my research endeavors to untangle the complexities of human communication, employing innovative methodologies to elucidate linguistic dynamics within societal contexts. Of particular interest to me is the impact of digital media on social interactions and identity management. I have made significant contributions to prestigious journals such as the Journal of Multimodal Communication, Social Semiotics, Journal of Pragmatics, Australian Review of Applied Linguistics, Discourse, Context & Media, and Journal of Linguistic Landscapes.

I welcome students interested in discussing MRes or doctoral supervision in the interdisciplinary study of language, culture, and society, particularly focusing on linguistic anthropology, semiotics, sociolinguistics, mediated discourse analysis, digital media, and linguistic landscapes.

I employ linguistic ethnography in my research to investigate the intricacies of daily social and language practices. My primary areas of interest lie in the realms of consumption, material culture, and urban modernities. Specifically, my research is centred on exploring ethnic shops and markets in Australia.

I am interested in supervising projects on social interaction, interactional sociolinguistics, identity, classroom interaction, language and media, critical discourse analysis, mediated discourse analysis/nexus analysis.
