Biography

Hi, and welcome to my staff profile.

My name is Ben. I am a social worker with a practice background in community mental health, group work with men and boys, and community development. I'm also a lecturer, researcher, and academic course advisor for the bachelor of social work degree at Western Sydney University (based at the Liverpool Campus). My key teaching areas are Group Work in Social Work, Mental Health in the Community, Field Education, Social Work Practice Methods, and Theories and Knowledges for Social Work. I love teaching social work and critically engaging with students about how it is they might learn about the world and the ways in which they can contribute to making it a better place to live, for themselves and their communities.

For those curious about my research interests, I've created two social work focused podcasts called Social Work Stories (socialworkstories.com) and Social Work Discoveries (swdiscoveries.com) which investigate social work practice and social work research, with articles and book chapters published (or soon to be) on the impact of this emerging practice of podcasting in social work education. My Ph.D. research investigates the complexities of relationships between men and boys in a dynamic group mentoring program funded and facilitated by the Penrith Panthers football club, called Building Young Men. I am embedded in the Building Young Men project as a mentor, researcher, and program developer, which I absolutely love. Throughout my writing I engage with the ‘thinking tools’ of Bourdieu as I attempt to investigate power, capital, and change in the lives of those participating in my research. I have several forthcoming journal articles and book chapters that explore the work done within this project and my thesis, of which I am excited to share with you and the world.

But hey, that's enough about me for now... I am very open to receiving your email correspondence (b.joseph@westernsydney.edu.au) if you would like to discuss anything further regarding my research or teaching, and I wish you all the best in finding what it is you're looking for.

Ben.
