Biography

Distinguished Professor Lynn Kemp is Director of the Translational Research and Social Innovation (TReSI) group in the School of Nursing and Midwifery, and academic leader of the Centre for Transforming early Education and Child Health (TeEACH). She is recognised as an international leader in the field of early childhood interventions in primary and community health, translational research and implementation science. Her local, national and international research in early childhood is bringing quality evidence-based early intervention programs to vulnerable families with young children in Australia and world-wide.

Originally trained as a registered nurse at the then Lidcombe Hospital, Lynn commenced her academic career in 2002 with a commitment to improving health equity for vulnerable groups, focussed on the critical early years of life.  The Maternal Early Childhood Sustained Home-visiting (MECSH) program Lynn developed in south-western Sydney has received USA government approval as an effective, evidence-based sustained home visiting intervention. MECSH is now implemented in Australia, the UK, USA and South Korea, currently serving more than 15,000 families world-wide. Significantly, in South Korea, her work has been instrumental in the establishment of a universal child and family health service system, serving the city’s 10million residents, where previously families had no access to such support.

Lynn’s work is leading translation of research findings into population-scale programs. Through the MECSH programs nurses working with families have, as described by one nurse, "a great opportunity to facilitate some changes, empower families to find a way forward that might be different from their past." Her skill in supporting population scale implementation is now also informing strategies for improved adoption of effective cancer, volunteer and integrated primary and community health interventions. Lynn is an academic leader graduating 15 PhD students in the past 10 years, and an honorary fellow at Kings College London and University of Vermont.

Originally trained as a registered nurse, Distinguished Professor Kemp had 10 years of clinical nursing service. She commenced her academic career in 2002 and has developed a significant program of community-based children and young people's research that includes world and Australian-first intervention studies such as the Maternal Early Childhood Sustained Home-visiting (MECSH) study, the first randomised trial of sustained nurse home visiting commencing antenatally and continuing to child-age 2 years, that is embedded in universal health services, the Bulundidi Gudaga trial of sustained nurse home visiting in an urban Aboriginal community, the right@home randomised trial of sustained nurse home visiting, and the Volunteer Family Connect trial of volunteer home visiting. Distinguished Professor Kemp is now leading an international program of translational research, studying the implementation of these effective interventions at population scale world-wide with programmes in Australia, England, South Koreaand the USA.

Lynn is also undertaking new research expanding the remit of the MECSH program to include older children (2toSchool project), children in foster care or adopted (Family Relationships and Early Childhood Sustained Home-visiting (FRECSH)) and programs for children with or at-risk of disability, including children with neonatal abstinance syndrome  (MECSH-D). She is also establishing a program of research reorienting service systems to the concept of HOPE: Healthy Outcomes from Positive Experiences. These studies are embedded within an ecological approach, that includes studies of social and service innovations to improve the equity of service access for families experiencing adversity, including the HUB project, the KEYS Network, and the Healthy Wealthy Families project. She also takes a lifecourse approach, including studies of children exiting the out-of-home care system (Ladder project), and studies of the experiences of children and families in the out-of-home care sector.
