Biography

Dr Buskila is a senior lecturer at the school of Medicine and a senior research fellow at the MARCS institute. He completed his Ph.D. in neurophysiology from Ben-Gurion University, Israel in 2010. His thesis titled "Neuronal-Astrocytic nitrosative interactions" focused on the effects of the rapid release of Nitric Oxide (NO) from cortical astrocytes on their neighboring neurons. Following his Ph.D. he joined the lab of Prof. Graham Ellis-Davies (Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai) as a postdoctoral research fellow, where he studied the effect of β-amyloid on short and long term synaptic dynamics of cortical pyramidal neurons using electrophysiological and 2-photon imaging techniques. In 2011, Dr Buskila joined the Bioelectronics and Neuroscience (BENS) research group (now part of the MARCS Institute) at the University of Western Sydney, first as a postdoctoral research fellow and later as a senior research fellow.

Dr Buskila's research focuses on signal processing of cortical neurons, with emphasis on neuronal-astrocytic interactions. He uses multi-site electrophysiological recordings along with imaging techniques to measure and evaluate the way neurons and astrocytes communicate.

The mammalian brain collects information about the external world and builds an internal representation using electrochemical signals. The overarching goal of the research done in my lab is to understand the mechanisms governing the transmission and integration of these signals. We focus specifically on the relationship between synaptic interactions, signal propagation delays, and neural- astrocytic interactions during neurodegenerative diseases (ALS; Alzheimer’s disease). We use multi-site electrophysiological recordings along with imaging techniques to measure and evaluate the way neurons and astrocytes communicate.

Current research projects include:

1. Astrocytic modulation of brain waves

Mice models and methods: GFAP-GFP mice; Intracellular and extracellular electrophysiological recordings from brain slices; Ion-selective recordings of K+ levels; pharmacological studies; focal photostimulation of caged compounds.

2. The impact of neuroinflammation on Alzheimer’s Disease

Mice models and methods: IL-6 and ChAT-mice; induction of acute neuroinflammation; intracellular e-phys recordings (patch-clamp);

3. Targeting excitability of motoneuron’s in ALS mice models

Mice models and methods: SOD1 mice; Intracellular and extracellular electrophysiological recordings from brain slices; Ion-selective recordings of K+ levels; pharmacological studies; focal photostimulation of caged compounds.
