Biography

Dr Olayide Ogunsiji (BSc, MSc, BN, RN, PhD) is a Senior Lecturer and Director of Academic Workforce (Liverpool campus) at the School of Nursing and Midwifery, Western Sydney University (WSU). Prior to her migration to Australia in 1999, she had a BSc. and MSc. Sociology and was an Associate Lecturer at the then Ogun State University, Nigeria (now Olabisi Onabanjo University, Nigeria). Olayide is a registered nurse by profession having completed all her nursing degrees in Australia. She has an extensive experience working in Acute and Community settings in various nursing areas including Cardiology, Mental Health and Surgical Nursing.

Dr Ogunsiji joined the academic staff of WSU in 2008 and was awarded her PhD in 2009. Since her PhD, Olayide has been initiating and leading multidisciplinary teams in developing and conducting research in the area of Women’s Health. She has focused on Migrant and Refugee women’s health, African women’s health with topic areas that include Female genital mutilation, Intimate Partner Violence, Breast and Cervical Cancer Screening Practices and Experiences of Nursing workforce in Refugee Health. Olayide has been successful in obtaining internal competitive WSU research grants and NSW Government research funding. She was successful in the government funding and collaborated in developing a community partnership project aimed at raising cancer screening awareness among African and Chinese migrant women in Sydney, Australia. She has presented her work in international, national and local conferences; and published in high impact journals. Her work on Female Genital Mutilation has received attention through media including ABC, SBS radio and SBS online.

Olayide is a Senior Fellow Higher Education Advance (SFHEA) and has been teaching all levels of undergraduate nursing students, postgraduate and higher degree research students. She is passionate about primary prevention of health issues and advocates the importance of paying attention to Social Determinant of Health as the way to addressing several health issues. She is currently supervising 2 Bachelor of Nursing Honours, 3 Masters of Research and 1 PhD students. She led 16 students on a field trip to China in an undergraduate unit on Comparative Health Care delivery.

Dr Ogunsiji is the Founder of African Women’s Health and Support Organisation (AWHASO), a not-for-profit organisation for promotion of African women’s health at home and abroad. She is the Chair of the Management Board of Blacktown Women’s and Girls Health Centre, Blacktown and a member of the Community Migrant Resource Centre Management Board.

Olayide is a multi-award winner including: (1) Dorothy Garrigus Adams 2021 Award for excellence in service at the Sigma Theta Tau International Honour Society International Awards (2) Western Sydney University 2020 Vice-Chancellor Excellence Award for university engagement and sustainability (3) Blacktown local woman of the year at the 2020 New South Wales Women of the Year Award.
