Biography

Dr Milan Piya is based at the School of Medicine at Western Sydney University, and a clinical academic endocrinologist at Camden and Campbelltown Hospitals. He chairs the research committee at Camden and Campbelltown Hospitals, and is Research Lead for the South Western Sydney Metabolic Rehabilitation and Bariatric Program (SWS MRBP) at Camden. He is Clinical Lead for the Inpatient Diabetes Service at Campbelltown Hospital, where he also chairs the Diabetes and Insulin Safety Board. He has been in Sydney since 2017, and prior to that was working as a Consultant Physician and Endocrinologist at Derby Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust in the UK. Milan is originally from Nepal where he completed his medical training before moving to the UK to complete his basic physician training as well as specialist training in Endocrinology and General Medicine. He completed his PhD in obesity and metabolism at the University of Warwick in 2013, and worked in 3 major obesity and bariatric centres in the UK over 10 years. He was a Diabetes UK Clinical Champion from 2014-2016, and Chair of the Young Diabetologists and Endocrinologists Forum (YDEF) from 2013-2014.

As Research Lead for the SWS MRBP, Milan has been exploring the effect of multidisciplinary management, weight loss and exercise on the metabolic and psychological health of patients in the program who have an average starting body mass index of 51 Kg/m2. He is also studying the effect of rapid weight loss on the remission of type 2 diabetes in primary care – DiRECT Australia, and is part of the Wollondilly Diabetes Program, focussing on integrated diabetes care between primary and secondary care. With over a quarter of patients in hospital having diabetes, he has recently worked on two inpatient diabetes cluster randomised clinical trials as well as a study on opportunistic diabetes screening for Aboriginal people in the Emergency Department.
