Biography

Dr Garry Stevens is a Clinical Psychologist by professional background and Program Director in Humanitarian and Development Studies (HADS) at Western. As part of the Humanitarian and Development Research Initiative (HADRI), he is involved in projects examining population preparedness for disasters and critical incidents, including occupational risk and resilience factors among emergency service workers, Disaster Medical Assistance Teams (AUSMAT) and humanitarian aid workers and trainees. His recent work with Aid Practitioners focuses on worker self-care in high pressure work environments. He is also involved in population mental health and epidemiology, including technology assisted mental health care in hospital and community settings.

Garry's research is inter-disciplinary and across four primary streams:

(1) Community resilience to disasters

(2) Occupational self-care among humanitarian and emergency service workers

(3) Humanitarian engineering – renewable energy for disaster early warning systems

(4) Technology assisted mental health care: SMS aftercare for deliberate self-harm
