About the scholarship
Western Sydney University supports higher degree research candidates with a range of scholarship opportunities. This category is for applicants who are Indigenous Australians, and who identify as an Indigenous Australian and are accepted as such by an Indigenous Australian community.
This scholarship is named in honour of Yarramundi, who was a Kuradji and Lawman of the Boorooberongal Clan (Richmond NSW) of the Dharug Nation between the late 1700s and early 1800s.
The information below outlines the requirements for our Yarramundi Scholarships. The frequently asked questions below include important information about how to apply. We receive a very high volume of applications and scholarships are awarded on a competitive basis. Incomplete applications or applications that do not meet the requirements may not be considered.

Who can apply? | You must be a person of Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander heritage who can meet Western Sydney University's confirmation of identity requirements. |
Scholarship inclusions: | Recommended by the Australian Government Department of Education, the Yarramundi Post Graduate Research Scholarship includes: A max stipend rate of $52,352.00 AUD per annum, for up to three (3) years for Doctorate studies or two (2) years for Masters at the full-time rate. Tuition fees are covered by the Australian Government Research Training Program (RTP). A max stipend rate of $26,176.00 AUD per annum for up to six (6) years for Doctorate studies and four (4) years for Masters at the part-time rate. Tuition fees are covered by the Australian Government Research Training Program (RTP). Please note part-time scholarship rate is liable to tax. |
Scholarship exclusions: | Travel costs, visa costs, relocation expenses and other expenses are not covered by the scholarship. |
Eligibility criteria:
The successful applicant should:
- Identify as being an Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander person (being an Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander person is a genuine occupational qualification as authorised under Section 14 (D) of the NSW Anti-Discrimination Act, 1977 NSW.
- Be enrolled in, or have applied for a Western Sydney University Post Graduate Research program listed above.
- Provide Certified copies of all tertiary graduation certificates and academic transcripts for degrees completed outside of Western Sydney University.
- Provide Certified evidence of citizenship status (e.g. passport, birth certificate, citizenship papers, etc.) or certified evidence of residency status (for Australian permanent residents only).
- Provide a letter of support from the Director of Indigenous Research.
- Provide any evidence of relevant employment or experience directly related to research training (if applicable).
- Provide Confirmation of Identity. See more information provided below.
Confirmation of Identity
Western Sydney University requires the following documentation to be considered for scholarships dedicated to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islanders. These documents are required by the application closing date.
- A certified copy of your confirmation of identity from a registered Community Organisation (e.g. Land Council) with a common seal confirming a person to be of Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander descent.
If you are unable to provide the above, you will need to supply a self-declaration statutory declaration along with one of the following:
- Supporting documentation in the form of a genealogy document (such as Linkup NSW), OR
- A letter of support using the Western Sydney University Community Confirmation Declaration form or a letter on official letterhead by a recognised community member or organisation (such as Aboriginal Medical Service, High School Principal, Aboriginal Education Consulting Group, Family and Community Services, Aboriginal Housing or other Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander incorporated corporation).
Please note that the letter of support cannot be supplied by a current staff member of Western Sydney University. All confirmation of identity documentation needs to be forwarded to the Director of Badanami, Josh Mason for validation: j.mason@westernsydney.edu.au
How to apply:
- Review the project’s eligibility criteria. You will need to provide in your application a document which explains how you satisfy the projects Eligibility Criteria (see above).
- Contact the Director of Indigenous Research Gawaian Bodkin-Andrews (g.bodkinandrews@westernsydney.edu.au) to discuss your eligibility, and your intention to apply for this scholarship. You should email them introducing yourself, describe your qualifications and experience, and express your interest in the Yarramundi Scholarship. If they are interested, you may want to arrange a phone call, video call or meeting to discuss your application. You will need to request a letter of support from the Director of Indigenous Research to support your application for this scholarship.
- Submit an online application for the scholarship via the Online Portal. Please select the 'Project Scholarship' icon and choose the "Yarramundi Postgraduate Research Scholarship" option.

All potential applicants must review the following frequently asked questions before submitting an application for a research scholarship.
Do I need to identify a supervisor for my project before I apply?
Yes. To be considered for a research scholarship, your application must include a letter of support from a suitable supervisor for your proposed research project.

Can I submit additional documentation at a later date?
No. Research scholarships are awarded on a competitive basis. All documents including evidence of publications, evidence of supervisory support and all other supporting documentation must be received before the application will be assessed.
What does a scholarship provide?
All scholarships include:
- a tax-free stipend for up to 3 years (2 years for MPhil and MRes).
- a funded place in a research degree for domestic students.
Scholarships do not include funding for relocation costs or other expenses unless otherwise stated.
How are scholarships awarded?
Research scholarships are awarded on a competitive basis by a Western Sydney University appointed ranking panel.

The application process, eligibility criteria, ranking criteria and guidelines for awarding scholarships are subject to be revised and may change for future scholarship releases.
Can I work while on a scholarship?
Yes. Scholarship holders are permitted to undertake up to 10 hours paid employment each week provided that the work does not interfere with your study program. It is expected that a minimum of 35 hours per week will be devoted to your study program throughout the year. Scholarship holders are entitled to four (4) weeks annual leave per year of the award.
Scholarship holders are not obligated to undertake tutoring or other academic employment at Western Sydney University.
Can I study from overseas and receive a scholarship?
No. You are expected to be onshore in Australia for the duration of your studies, except for periods of approved overseas study leave to undertake fieldwork or other activities related to your project.
Exceptions may be made on a conditional basis, due to factors such as travel restrictions.
Can I apply for a part-time scholarship?
Scholarships are awarded for full-time study. Part-time awards are available if you have an illness or disability which prevents you from studying full-time or you have significant caring commitments for a family member. You may not apply for a part-time award to enable you to work more than 10 hours per week. Part-time awards are currently taxable.
When will I be expected to commence my studies?
The Graduate Research School will contact you with further information about research commencement dates.
If you are awarded a scholarship and you are not able to commence your studies by the date indicated on your offer, the scholarship offer may be withdrawn.
Can I apply in another round if my application is unsuccessful?
If your application is unsuccessful, you will need to submit a new online application in the next suitable release.
