Top tips to feel supported at Western Sydney University
Ahead of the new semester starting, Western Sydney University Student Services Hub (SSH) Officer Vidushi Sethi shares her top tips on where both new and continuing students can reach out for support at university.
Studying a Master of Public Health at Western’s Parramatta South campus, Vidushi noted, “Opportunities at Western are boundless, and all it takes is a leap of faith in yourself to seize them”.
With a wide range of support on offer at the University, she suggests that the SSH is a great place for students to start.
1. Student Services Hub
The Student Services Hub has got you covered in every way possible – whether you prefer face-to-face assistance, at one of nine SSH hubs across our campuses,-, a quick chat over the phone, virtual sessions on Zoom, or even just shooting us an email. It's all about making sure you feel comfortable seeking help in the way that suits you best.
When it comes to what kind of support SSH provides, think of us as your all-in-one solution. We're here for anything – information, advice, forms, registrations – you name it. If we can't directly help, we'll connect you with the right resources to ensure success, making sure no one is left behind.
2. Western Success
Speaking of success, have you heard about Western Success? It's a peer-to-peer support program designed to guide you through every aspect of university life. Get insights and tailored advice from experienced peers who understand exactly what you're going through.
Western Success Advisors offer one-on-one support while connecting you with the University’s wide range of resources such as wellbeing services, social events and academic support programs, and empower you with the tools and skills you need to achieve your study goals. They may reach out to you around important dates during session, or you can reach out to them for advice at any time.
3. Academic Support
There are many different programs to guide and provide you with the skills to reach your full potential when it comes to your coursework. Study Smart, Peer Assisted Study Sessions (PASS) and MATES are key programs at Western that set you up for excellence.
Whether it's mentorship from the teaching staff you're engaging with or subject-specific help by your peers who have completed the relevant subjects before, these programs act as your stepping stones to excellence here at Western. MESH also provides Western Sydney University students at all stages in their courses of study, with mathematics and statistics support.

4. Student Wellbeing Services
Western cares about every student and no matter what challenges you may be navigating; we’ve got your back.
The Student Wellbeing Services have experienced teams with some dedicated welfare counsellors that will listen and provide free and confidential support whether you need assistance with caregiver responsibilities, a disability, financial hardships, accommodation, advocacy, legal advice or your mental health and wellbeing.
5. Badanami Centre for Indigenous Education
Across our campuses, the Badanami Centre for Indigenous Education stands as a beacon of support, providing educational, social and cultural aid to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students.
Offering a comprehensive range of services, including study skills, tutoring, courses, career advice, counselling, and even study abroad opportunities, it caters to the diverse needs of our Indigenous students.
With over seven service-packed centres, we ensure that support is not just accessible but enriching for every indigenous student at Western.
6. Career Support
Our commitment extends to every student and shaping your future. The Careers and Employability Team at Western is ready to assist you in everything career-related, from crafting impressive resumes, acing mock interviews and exploring on-and off-campus jobs.
They can also help you secure international internships and volunteer opportunities and link you with career expos and events to meet your future employers and industry peers.
7. WESTERNLife
Should you find yourself in need of additional support, consider delving into the vibrant virtual and in person community of clubs on WESTERNLife. Here, you'll discover a myriad of niche topics and interests, ranging from cultural and community groups to gaming, sports and socialising communities.
There's even a space for academic enthusiasts, with dedicated groups for those immersed in different disciplines such as sciences and engineering. Joining these clubs not only provides additional support but also opens doors to like-minded individuals who share your passions and pursuits.
