$2m scholarship program strengthens Walker Family commitment to Western Sydney

The Walker Family Foundation has pledged funding of over $2 million in a partnership with Western Sydney University to promote educational opportunity and performance.

Beginning in 2021, the first 20 Aspire Scholarships and 10 Excel Scholarships, each for three years, will support eligible students to fulfil their learning and future working potential.

Western Sydney University Vice-Chancellor and President, Professor Barney Glover AO, has extended his gratitude to Mr Walker and his family, on behalf of the University community.

“These new scholarships are testament to the incredible generosity of the Walker family, and the commitment of the Walker Family Foundation to enhancing the lives of the people in the local region,” said Professor Glover.

“These scholarships will raise the educational aspirations of people in Western Sydney. By providing our students with access to world-class education, the scholarships will play a role in transforming the lives of the scholarship recipients, and will have far-reaching positive impacts on the communities in which they live and work.”

The significant philanthropic gift is the latest in the Walker family’s extensive support of the Greater Western Sydney region.

Western Sydney University and Lang Walker have a strategic partnership which involves Walker Group developing the University’s new state-of-the-art vertical campus in the Bankstown CBD (scheduled to open in 2022). This is in addition to delivering the Macarthur Medical Research Centre which is set to transform Campbelltown Hospital into a dynamic hub for medical education and research, also with Walker Family Foundation sponsorship.

“My family is dedicated to social wellbeing through education, health and cultural initiatives,” said Lang Walker AO, Executive Chairman of Walker Group.

“We feel proud and privileged to be associated with Western Sydney University, and the communities of Greater Western Sydney, in providing this encouragement for the educational journeys of local young people.”

Commencing students studying any undergraduate degree at Western Sydney University could be eligible for a Walker Family Foundation Aspire or Excel Scholarship. Applicants must live in the Parramatta, Penrith, Blacktown, Bankstown or Campbelltown Local Government areas. Applications for these scholarships close 5 February. For more information, visit the Scholarships webpage.

As part of the scholarships, recipients may have the opportunity to undertake work experience or an internship with Walker Group.
