Celebrating science and technology at Western during National Science Week 2020
As part of National Science Week 2020,(opens in a new window) Western Sydney University is showcasing a variety of online events and activities suitable for all ages in celebration of science, engineering, mathematics, technology and innovation across the university.
Starting on Saturday 15 August through to Sunday 23 August, the community is invited to virtually experience some of the cutting edge research and projects currently happening at Western.
From live Q&A webinar sessions, to interactive virtual lab tours and informative videos and podcasts – there is something to inspire everyone.
- The MARCS Institute for Brain, Behaviour and Development,(opens in a new window) in partnership with City of Parramatta Libraries (opens in a new window), is offering a range of brain science themed webinars across the lifespan from toddler speech development, to keeping the brain healthy as we age; and a fascinating talk on the amazing connections between music and mathematics.
- Over at The International Centre for Neuromorphic Systems (ICNS),(opens in a new window) the team will be hosting a live Q&A webinar about tracking space junk and other orbiting objects in space with the research team who recently developed ground breaking sensor technology to be mounted to the International Space Station. The ICNS team will also talk about how they build brain like computers inspired by biology, and demonstrate their self-playing pinball machine and foosball table.
- Researchers from the NICM Health Research Institute(opens in a new window) will host a one-hour online seminar discussing how integrative medicine can keep your heart healthy; while Western’s Allied Health Discipline(opens in a new window) is hosting an online event for health professionals and researchers to discuss the future of health in Western Sydney and beyond.
- Become a Citizen Scientist and learn how ordinary citizens can help our School of Science researchers, and discover more about our terrific turtles and wonderful wombats in this zoology talk – or tune into a podcast about local Western Sydney birdlife with an ornithologist from the Hawkesbury Institute for the Environment.(opens in a new window)
- Meanwhile, microbiologists from Western’s School of Science have teamed up with other experts from Macquarie University, the Department of Primary Industries and The Joint Academic Microbiology Seminars (JAMS) Organisation for a special podcast on microbiology, answering questions about infections and diseases, COVID-19 research, vaccine development, and more!
