Medicine

BE A LIFE SAVER

The School of Medicine believes that advances in medicine rely on advances in knowledge. Our research activities include working in laboratories at a molecular level, improving educational practice with medical students, working with patients in outpatient clinics at local hospitals, and working with Aboriginal medical services in rural and remote areas.

From this year, Western Sydney and Charles Sturt University are delivering a Doctor of Medicine (MD) course together. The Joint Program in Medicine is a five-year undergraduate entry degree that qualifies you to be a medical intern in Australia and New Zealand.

Graduates will be eligible for registration by the Medical Board of Australia and its equivalent in New Zealand following successful completion of a period of internship or supervised training as required by the medical board, and will be able to apply for registration in a number of overseas countries.

Four themes run throughout the course: patient care, health in the community, personal and professional development, scientific basis of medicine. Patient contact and clinical learning begins in the first weeks and continues throughout the program.

Admission to this course is based on three separate criteria:

  1. ATAR/IB or Academic Rank: See the course handbook for further details.
  2. University Clinical Aptitude Test (UCAT): The UCAT examination is run externally and the threshold mark is not published by the university as it varies year on year.
