Language is fundamental to the human experience. Through study of how language works, you will make contact with fundamental philosophical, socio-cultural, and psychological questions about what it means to be human.

Linguistics will also equip you to use your language and linguistic skills in professional settings such as teaching, interpreting and translation, journalism, business or international relations.

Course Frequently Asked Questions

The course consists of a specialisation in a language other than English (LOTE), a specialisation in Linguistics, four Bachelor of Arts generic core units, and 40 credit points of elective units (which may be used towards a sub-specialisation in another language).

Graduates will be able to use their language and linguistics skills in professional settings such as teaching, interpreting and translation, journalism, business, or international relations. Employment opportunities may be found in the State and Commonwealth public service, overseas organisations, the media, business and industry, education, and research.

The key field of study is in interpreting and translation, as well as a major in one of the following languages: Arabic, Chinese, Japanese, or Indonesian. You will also study linguistic and cultural studies and complete a period of professional practical experience. This usually takes place during the session breaks.

This course is professionally accredited through the National Accreditation Authority for Translators and Interpreters (NAATI), so you can graduate directly into a professional career as an interpreter or translator with no further study.

This course is designed to provide you with appropriate training and theoretical background for a career as a professional interpreter or translator. As a graduate of this course, you can look forward to career opportunities in international business, private practice, tourism, welfare, academic and diplomacy.
