Industrial Design

GET READY TO TAKE YOUR INDUSTRIAL DESIGN CAREER TO THE NEXT LEVEL

Industrial design is a vital part of modern-day living. Every day of our lives, we encounter products designed and manufactured with the intention of making our lives easier. It is industrial designers, incorporating a lateral and cross-disciplinary approach to problem solving, who create the most useful products.

The primary focus of our Industrial Design program is ensuring that our graduates are completely industry-ready, able to think strategically and provide innovative design solutions in a commercial context. The course promotes an awareness of the place of design in society and its effect on people, the environment and the economy.

Course Frequently Asked Questions

In this degree, you can specialise in two different majors: Design Practice and Technology Entrepreneurship.

Industrial Design students at Western Sydney University have access to the most advanced rapid prototyping and model-making facilities in Australia. As well as a fully equipped workshop for hands-on experimentation, we offer Fused Deposition Modelling (FDM), which is a solid-based rapid prototyping method that extrudes material layer-by-layer to build a model.

This means that as you move from paper to computer-aided designing, you can quickly produce cost-effective conceptual models, engineering models, and functional testing prototypes. We offer four types of rapid prototyping: 3D Systems Thermojet (prints in wax), Stratasys Prodigy Plus, Dimension SST and a larger platform Dimension 1200 (all print in ABS plastic), and 3D Laser scanning.

This course is recognised by the Design Institute of Australia (DIA) and, as a graduate, you will automatically qualify for student membership.

The Industrial Design course culminates in a final year industrial design project intending to develop visionary work leading to industry placement, Masters or PhD research into the place of design in society and its effect on people, the environment and the economy, and provides you with the ability to work alone or collaboratively.
