The Shed

As an advocate for the people of Western Sydney, the University strives to work in partnership with our communities to help contribute to the development, wellbeing and prosperity of the region.

Located in Emerton, within the LGA of Blacktown, "The Shed" is a community drop-in centre that provides practical help and support for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander men at risk of suicide. The Shed is a valuable resource for locals in need of support and was recently shortlisted as a finalist for the WayAhead Aboriginal Social and Emotional Wellbeing Mental Health Matters Award.

Functioning as more than just a crisis centre, The Shed supports mental, physical and emotional wellbeing and connects people to mental health, government, housing, legal and therapeutic services. It also provides a safe haven and sense of community for people from all walks of life to connect with culture, or to drop in for a chat. "I like that I can sit under a tree and talk to someone here rather than inside a building or office," said one local.

The community-focused support provided at The Shed aligns closely with the social determinants of health and is specifically focused on the determinants of distress and suicide, and linking people to the services of which they are most in need.

The Shed is supported by Western’s Centre for Male Health, who work closely with peak governing bodies, local health organisations, and community groups to enhance and promote the health and wellbeing of men and boys across Australia. The Centre is committed to promoting activities in the community and highlighting how we can work together to add value to existing initiatives.

In other men’s health news, we are pleased to announce that the Centre for Male Health will host Men’s Health Week in 2024. Held annually in June, Men’s Health Week focuses on the physical and mental health and wellbeing of men and boys in our community and is designed to provoke thought and discussion about what needs to be done to improve male health. More information on the events will be available through the Centre for Male Health, closer to the time.
