Conference Overview
This year, the annual SABEL HDR Conference will explore the theme Interdisciplinary Perspectives: Research that Blends Methods, Theories and Worlds. Over three days in September, presentations will be delivered by Higher Degree Researchers of Western Sydney University’s Faculty of Social Sciences, Arts, Business, Education and Law, and the Institute for Culture and Society. The conference aims to promote interdisciplinary understanding and collaboration across the Faculty and the Institute, enriching research through the exchange of ideas while inspiring Higher Degree Research candidates and showcasing the diverse directions that research can take.
Call for Papers
The SABEL HDR Conference is an annual event intended to promote collaboration across the disciplines that make up Western Sydney University’s Faculty of Social Sciences, Arts, Business, Education and Law (SABEL), together with the Institute for Culture and Society. By bringing together researchers from across the Faculty and the Institute, the conference provides an opportunity to share research, learn from colleagues in other disciplines, and foster new collaborations.
All Higher Degree Research candidates involved in one or more of SABEL’s disciplines are invited to submit papers for presentation at the conference, which will take place from 8–10 September 2026. Submissions should reflect the conference theme and, where appropriate, demonstrate the interdisciplinary nature of the applicant’s research. Presentations that identify opportunities for future interdisciplinary collaboration are particularly encouraged.
Presentations should be 15–20 minutes in length and will be followed by a 5–10 minute question-and-answer session. While most presentations will take the form of scholarly papers, the conference also welcomes discipline-appropriate creative and practice-based presentations. The conference will be held in person at Western’s Parramatta City Campus.

By bringing together researchers from a wide range of disciplines, the conference provides an opportunity to share ideas, foster new collaborations, and inspire Higher Degree Research candidates through engagement with the research community. Presenters are encouraged, where relevant, to reflect on how their research and doctoral journey have contributed to their broader academic or professional careers.
