Today a construction enterprise is constantly being pulled apart in different directions by the forces of globalisation, industrialisation and digitalisation. To balance the external forces and prevent a possible collapse, the internal dynamics of construction enterprises are changing. As construction enterprises transform, new business models are emerging. The nature of this emergence is dynamic and occurring in a continuum; from a fairly moderate state to a highly evolved state. Over the last couple of decades, considerable amount of literature has evolved on smart technologies and modern construction. However, no research has been conducted on how different construction enterprises should approach and redefine their business models to take full advantage of the best practices, available opportunities and benefits in this newly evolving construction market. This research proposes to explore and analyse significant levels of development in this evolution process in terms of a Capability Maturity Model (CMM). The rationale for adopting CMM is that it provides a step-by-step framework, which enables organisations to assess where they are positioned within the framework and then provide guidelines on what their process improvement priorities should be.
