Biography

Emeritus Professor Beryl Hesketh  (AM) retired from Western Sydney University in 2010 where she was Executive Dean of the College of Health and Science. She was previously the Pro-Vice-Chancellor (Sciences and Technology) at the University of Sydney where she was responsible for five large faculties (Architecture, Agriculture, Engineering, Science and Veterinary Science). She was also the Dean of Science at the University of Sydney for four years and Head of Department of Psychology at Macquarie University. Professor Hesketh is an eminent and currently active researcher. She has published widely internationally, and has been a recipient of Australian Research Council (ARC) funding continuously between 1987 until a few years after retiring. She has also served on, and chaired, one of the ARC Large Grants panels.

Through her role in several cooperative research centres and on the boards of spin-off companies, she has experience in the commercialisation of intellectual property and the creation of productive university-industry links. Professor Hesketh served on many editorial boards and was an associate editor for the Journal of Vocational Behavior, the Journal of Applied Psychology and the International Journal of Selection and Assessment, She was a reviewer for the Australian University Quality Authority, participation in many reviews of universities in Australia and  New Zealand.

In 1995 she chaired the Inaugural Australian Industrial and Organisational Psychology Conference and in 1997 she received the Elton Mayo award for her contriibutions to organisational psychology education and research. She was appointed a Member (AM) of the Order of Australia in 2021 for significant services to STEM education and organisational psychology.  

She is a Fellow of the Academy of Social Science Australia, the Australian Psychological Society, the USA based Association for Psychological Science and the Society for Inbdustrial and Organisational Psychology (SIOP).

Professor Beryl Hesketh's research and scholarship has focussed on integrating theory and practice and applying fundamental psychological principles to a range of practical problems with a primary focus on decision-making. She has received funding from ARC continuously since 1987, and has recently completed two ARC Discovery grants and currently holds a large ARC Linkage grant. Current and past research interests include:

  • Application of the Minnesota Theory of Work Adjustment, most recently to retirement adjustment
