Doctor Joanne Orlando

Senior Lecturer,
Early Childhood Education

Biography

Dr Joanne Orlando is a leading expert in the field of children and technology. In particular, her research focuses on the teaching, learning and social effects of children’s uses of technology. Joanne examines this focus across all ages (early childhood, primary, high school and young adults) at school, in the home and social spaces.

Joanne has established an outstanding reputation as leader of public debate internationally, and her strength is making complex ideas simple and interesting. As a result, government, key technology and telecommunications organisations, and the media regularly seek her out to provide expert advice and commentary on children and technology.

Publications of Joanne’s research and recommendations appear in journals and books internationally. She initiates new ideas and discussions about children and technology through opinion pieces in major newspapers around the globe, and through regular media appearances. Joanne has extensive expertise in media including many years writing and advising on Australia’ children’s educational television program PlaySchool.

Joanne is currently undertaking two major investigations: one of young children’s home uses of technology, and the other of the relationship between vulnerable children’s uses of technology and their well-being.

Completed Projects

Fair Go Research Project: Fair Go is funded by the Australian Research Council in collaboration with DET (NSW) and UWS. In this project extensive case studies were undertaken of 30 "exemplary" teachers of students in poverty. Joanne's focus is the ways exemplary teachers in poverty use technology in their teaching.

The e.ffects Project: An ARC funded collaborative research project undertaken by University of Technology, Sydney (UTS) and NSW Department of Education and Training (DET) that focuses on student learning in schools and classes where Computer Based Learning (CBL) is used. The objective of the study was to identify factors within primary and secondary schools that contribute to integration strategies with positive benefits for students.Collaborators: Professors Lyn Yates and Shirley Alexander, Dr Debra Hayes (UTS)

Net Gain: This project was funded by the NSW DET, Curriculum Support Directorate. It focused on the integration of computer based learning in NSW government schools. Collaborators: Dr Debra Hayes, Dr Sandy Schuck & Gilda Segal (UTS)
