Australian Indigenous Storytelling

A critical study of the way Aboriginal stories are being told in Australia today

Leigh Bruce (Tracker) TilmouthWriting and Society Centre member Alexis Wright is the principal investigator on this project that will develop an essayed memoir of the important Aboriginal visionary leader, political thinker and strategist, and resource scientist, Leigh Bruce (Tracker) Tilmouth. In looking closely at Tracker Tilmouth's own story-telling practice, the essays will examine how Aboriginal stories have been told in recent years, and which stories have been used in the creation of a national narrative for re-shaping Aboriginal Australia. The project will make significant contributions to understanding the failures and successes of current Aboriginal storytelling practices, and seek to identify those qualities in traditional Aboriginal storytelling narratives that might be used or adapted to resolve contemporary problems facing Aboriginal people, and to define the ways in which they can imagine and work towards their own futures.
