WSRC-WestWords Writers in Residence 2020-2021

Kavita and Rawah

Kavita Bedford and Rawah Arja

The Writing and Society Research Centre at Western Sydney University and the WestWords Writing Centre are pleased to announce Kavita Bedford and Rawah Arja as the two Western Sydney Writers in Residence for 2020/21.

Funded by a grant from the Cultural Fund Copyright Agency Limited, these two emerging authors will develop their professional skills and develop new work through a tailored program of activities with both organisations.

The program, revised to adapt to COVID-19 involves a number of elements, involving mentoring of the writers and the writers themselves engaging with students at WSU and school students in Western Sydney.

At Writing and Society the writers will be mentored by the Sydney Review of Books editor Catriona Menzies-Pike on writing feature length essays. They will be mentored on grant writing for funding applications. They will work with the Higher Degree Students Writers workshop in workshopping their creative writing, and with the writers in the WSRC’s The Writing Zone project, led by Kate Fagan, which is working towards the publication of chapbooks. They will deliver an online seminar as part of the WSRC seminar series. They will be mentored by staff in the Centre on teaching and writing practice, and work with undergraduate students in teaching into the creative writing program as guest (online) lecturers.

In addition, they will work with WestWords in developing community facing programs in schools and the promotion of creative writing throughout Western Sydney.
