Workshops

Western Sydney University operates variety of workshops which expose workers, students, and visitors to a range hazards from mechanical equipment, to hazardous substances, and oils and lubricants.

Any person carrying out tasks in a workshop must be trained not only in the use of the equipment therein but also the ancillary hazards that are intrinsic to the working environment e.g noise, dust, fumes, trip hazards, heavy lifting, sharp edges, etc.

In some cases the people will need to have special certificates of competency and/or specialised training to operate industrial equipment such as forklifts and cranes, abrasive blasting apparatus, spray painting etc.

The following rules apply to all workers, students and visitors entering a University workshop:

• Only qualified and competent personnel are allowed to operate machinery and equipment
• Food and drink are not permitted into the workshop.
• Jewellery or loose fitting clothing must not be worn while working in a workshop as it may get caught up on moving parts. Long hair must be retrained.
• Personal protective equipmentm suitable for the individual and equipment being used, must be worn at all times.
• Adjustments to machinery and equipment must be made with the machine is turned off.
• Guards on machinery and equipment must not be removed or tampered with.
• Inspect machinery and equipment prior to use. If there is any damage, report it to your supervisor and tag the machinery out of use.
• When equipment is taken out of service for maintenance or repairs the machine must be isolated from electrical and/or motive power, cleaned, locked off and tagged.
• Do not distract people who are using machinery and do not indulge in horseplay.
• Maintain high housekeeping standards, keep your work area tidy and clean up after yourself.
• Persons found to be ignoring safety rules will be asked to follow the rules or leave the workshop - if the person refuses contact the appropriate supervisor, manager or WHS Unit.
• Hazardous substances must be stored, handled and disposed of appropriately.
• Clean up and report any spills to your supervisor.
• Never use compressed air for cleaning clothing and machinery.
• Clean hands after using equipment and materials.
