Dr Rashid Flewellen


Associate Lecturer in Medical Education, School of Medicine


Rashid Flewellen began teaching with the School of Medicine in 2017, and previously with the School of Social Sciences and Psychology since 2016. During this time, he has taught numerous subjects including social work practice, children and families, mental health and Indigenous Studies in Community and Social Development. Currently within Medicine, he is primarily responsible for co-teaching the Community Research attachment for Year 4 medical students, which involves supporting over 2 dozen group research projects each year in collaboration with community-based supervisors. He has also taught Problem-Based Learning and Personal and Professional Development attachments within the Medical Education Unit across Years 1 to 3.

His clinical work involves providing interventions as a critical care Social Worker in the emergency department and intensive care units @ St George and Sutherland Hospitals-South Eastern Sydney Local Health District. He has also worked in private practice as an Accredited Mental Health Social Worker. He carries an International Certification as Advanced Alcohol and Drug Counsellor and has consulted community-based programs for drug use treatment in Sydney. His PhD research at the National Drug Research Institute, Curtin University, focused on clinician behaviour and communication skills development: Screening, and Brief Intervention Behaviours of Emergency Department Clinicians for Alcohol-Related Injuries; A Conceptual Framework Using the Theory of Planned Behaviour.
