Biography

Milan Piya is an Associate Professor in Diabetes, Obesity and Metabolism at the School of Medicine, Western Sydney University, as well as a clinical academic endocrinologist at Campbelltown and Camden Hospitals. He has a clinical and research interest in Type 2 diabetes, obesity and associated health conditions, particularly in the context of severe obesity.

Milan chairs the Campbelltown and Camden Hospitals research committee, and is the research lead for the multidisciplinary publicly funded South Western Sydney Metabolic Rehabilitation and Bariatric Program (SWS MRBP) based in Camden Hospital, where he has been exploring the effect of multidisciplinary weight management on the metabolic and psychological health in people with class 3 obesity. He chairs the South Western Sydney Local Health District (SWSLHD) inpatient diabetes working group, and is clinical lead for inpatient diabetes for Campbelltown Hospital where he also chairs the Diabetes and Insulin Safety Board. He is a member of the Diabetes Obesity and Metabolism Translational Unit (DOMTRU) as well as the Eating Disorders and Body Image (EDBI) group.

Milan is originally from Nepal where he attained his medical degree before moving to the UK to complete his basic physician training as well as specialist training in Endocrinology and General Medicine. He completed his PhD in obesity and metabolism at the University of Warwick, and has worked in three major obesity and bariatric centres in the UK over 10 years before moving to Sydney in 2017. He was a Diabetes UK Clinical Champion from 2014-2016, and Chair of the Young Diabetologists and Endocrinologists Forum (YDEF) from 2013-2014. He is currently on the council of the Australian and New Zealand Obesity Society (ANZOS), and a member of the Australian Diabetes Society, Diabetes UK and the National Association of Clinical Obesity Services (NACOS).
