Dr Gaetano Gargiulo

Position

Senior Research Lecturer in the Biomedical Engineering and Neuroscience research program at MARCS Institute

Biography

Dr. Gargiulo received his MS equivalent degree in Electronic Engineering (biomedical specialization) in 2006 awarded by "Federico II" the university of Naples and his Ph.D degree in 2010 awarded by "Alma Mater" University of Bologna.

He has extensive experience in the design, development, test and commercialization of medical devices (bio-potentials recording in particular). He has contributed to device design and spin-out of three start-up companies, all operating in the field of bio-instrumentation devices. During the past eight years he has worked towards the achievement of unobtrusive patient monitoring, successfully designing two ultra-high input impedance amplifiers suitable for passive dry (textile, rubber) electrodes. His demonstrated track record includes eight PCT patents, more than forty scientific publications and successful international cooperation in the area of bio-signal processing.

In 2015 Dr. Gargiulo joined the Bioelectronics & Neuroscience Research Program at The MARCS Institute in the role of Research Lecturer (promoted Senior in 2017) stepping up from the role of Post-doctoral research fellow. His research interests involve investigating the modelling of bio-signal sources and to the development of faster and more accurate diagnostic tools for cardiovascular diseases. His recent works into this field produced: 1) a novel electrocardiography (ECG) device which aims to increase the diagnostic power of the ECG removing a systematic error that is known affects all the recordings almost since its inception without disrupting the current practice; 2) novel means to monitor non-invasively and continuously cardiac stroke volume (amount of blood displaced by the human heart) and peripheral blood flow. All of these devices are currently under clinical trial with partner hospitals and research institutes.
