About this scholarship

The Capital Markets Cooperative Research Centre (CMCRC) PhD Program provides a range of PhD scholarships for high achieving students to conduct industry-based research projects through a number of academic partners and collaborators, such as University of Sydney, Macquarie University, University of Technology Sydney, University of NSW, Queensland University of Technology, RMIT, Monash University, Federation University, Wollongong University, University of Southern Australia and Western Sydney University.

The Health Market Quality program within the CMCRC is a highly interdisciplinary program that combines elements of health policy, health economics, epidemiology and public health with data mining, predictive analytics and simulation modelling. Successful candidates will have the opportunity to perform applied and valuable work in the health field, to work with leading scientists from an array of Australian universities, to interact with industry partners such as government agencies and health insurance funds, and can expect their research to be translated into tangible outcomes.

CMCRC research is about providing a better understanding of the efficiency of the health care system and conducting research that can inform both policy makers and industry stakeholders. CMCRC research is also about realising commercial benefits from innovation, and the CMCRC provides direct participation in commercial results for PhD Students.

What does the scholarship provide?

• Tax-free stipend of $50,000 per annum for up to 3 years.
• Domestic candidates will be awarded a funded place in the degree. The WSUInternational candidates may be awarded a tuition fee waiver.

Essential criteria

Applicants must:

• have a 1st class Honours degree or a Master degree with a major research component in one of the following discipline areas: Public Health, Health Services Research, Epidemiology, Biostatistics, Health Policy, Health Economics.
• have or be able to obtain an appropriate visa that allows them to study in Australia.

Desirable criteria

Applicants with:

• demonstrated record of research as evidenced by high quality peer reviewed publications and citations.
• demonstrated knowledge of research methodology (quantitative), study design, NHMRC levels of evidence and grades for recommendation, statistical methods, econometrics, policy evaluation, and epidemiology.
• demonstrated knowledge of handling large and linked data sets, and with good programming skills in at least one language such as R, Python, SAS or Stata.
• demonstrated understanding of the Australian health care system, basic coding schemes such as ICDs, DRGs and MBS items, and how providers are reimbursed.
• demonstrated knowledge and compliance with the ethical conduct of research.

Advice to applicants

This scholarship will appeal to candidates interested in working with industry partners, both in the public and private sector, on applied research projects that delivers solutions to specific problems. Successful candidates may be required to spend part of their time on-site with the industry partner, allowing them to gain precious hands-on industry experience.
