Thrive: Indigenous Scholarship

This represents a unique opportunity for a suitable candidate to undertake a PhD (or equivalent degree by research) as part of the Thrive: Finishing School Well project. Thrive is a partnership between Western Sydney University (WSU), University of Technology (UTS) and industry partners to understand the factors that lead to educational disadvantage and to improve the support and pathways that allow young people to succeed at school. The successful candidate will be supported by an exceptional team of child and youth researchers based at the Transforming early Education and Child Health Research Centre (TeEACH) and supervised by Thrive chief investigators as well as joining a large team of PhD candidates whose projects contribute to the broad Thrive project aims. This offers a unique opportunity to develop mixed methods capability, including access to participatory and co-design approaches and data-driven methods as well as to forge an emerging academic peer network. Applicants with backgrounds in education, social sciences, psychology, and health sciences are particularly encouraged to apply.

Candidates will receive a tax-free stipend of $50,000 (AUD) per annum to support living costs, supported by the Research Training Program (RTP) Fee Offset.

A co-designed intervention to reduce impact of vaping on oral health

In partnership with Western Sydney Local Health District, this research project encompasses a multifaceted approach to understanding and addressing the impact of vaping behaviour on oral health among adolescents and young adults. We aim to co-design an intervention with adolescents and young adults and then test the feasibility, acceptability and short-term effectiveness of the intervention, providing comprehensive insights and potential solutions to this public health concern.

Making CHOICES: Migrant and refugee women’s experiences of fertility management

THRI is offering a research scholarship to a PhD candidate passionate about migrant and refugee women’s reproductive health. This qualitative project, funded through the National Health and Medical Research Council (NHMRC), will focus on an aspect of fertility decision-making, contraception, or management of unintended pregnancies.

Facilitators and Barriers to Effective Implementation of Indigenous Models of Care in Mainstream Alcohol and Other Drug Treatment

THRI is offering a research scholarship to a highly motivated Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander PhD candidate to work with an academic and clinical research group exploring Indigenous models of care for alcohol and other drugs (AOD). The project will explore the facilitators and barriers to adopting an Indigenous model of care in mainstream AOD services.

Evaluating Aftercare-services in Preventing Suicidal Behaviour in Western Sydney

THRI is offering a research scholarship to a highly motivated PhD candidate to work within a research group that is partnering with WSLHD to investigate the effectiveness of (i) established mental health services delivering aftercare to those who present to services in suicidal crisis or following a suicide attempt on subsequent incidence of hospital treated attempted suicide; and (ii) community based services to provide crisis care on subsequent incidence of hospital treated attempted suicide. The project will involve epidemiological analyses of a range of linked administrative datasets to address project objectives.

Optimising Primary Health Care Service Trajectories to Reduce Preventable Hospitalisation and Avoidable Emergency Department Presentations

THRI is offering a research scholarship to a highly motivated PhD candidate to work within a research group that is partnering with WentWest Ltd, WSPHN, to evaluate the effectiveness of primary health care services on potentially preventable hospitalisation and leading causes of chronic illness. The project will involve statistical analyses of a range of linked administrative datasets to address project objectives, and the development of analytic tools that can inform local clinical decisions and identify sub-population at risk of key chronic disease outcomes.
