Western Sydney University joins successful bid for renewal of Capital Market CRC

Western Sydney University is a university partner of the Capital Markets Cooperative Research Centre (CMCRC) (opens in a new window), which has been awarded more than $32M of funding over the next five years from the Australian Government Cooperative Research Centres program. Western Sydney University will collaborate with the CMCRC on the health research program on topics related to the containment of health expenditures and the efficiency of health care markets. Other university partners involved in research related to health care include the University of Technology Sydney, the University of Sydney, Macquarie University, Monash University, Federation University, Queensland University of Technology and the University of Southern Australia.

A/Professor Federico Girosi is Head of Research of the CMCRC health program (opens in a new window), which sees more than 25 PhD students and postdocs working with a variety of industry partners on applied research projects. Industry partners include government agencies (NSW Health, the National Health Performance Authority, the Transport Accident Commission in Victoria) and private enterprises (Medibank Private, the Health Round table, the Australian Health Service Alliance, Hospital and Medical Benefits System).

Dr. Girosi and Dr. Ghassem Pour, also with the Centre for Health Research, supervise a cohort of 5 CMCRC PhD students, while an additional CMCRC student is supervised by Prof. Athula Ginige in the School of Computing, Engineering &Math. The topics of the PhDs span a broad range of topics, from the analysis of spatio-temporal patient flows, to the microsimulation of the health of NSW, to the efficiency of the AR-DRG system. The 6 CMCRC PhD students are funded through generous CMCRC PhD Scholarships and work closely with the CMCRC industry partners and other CMCRC researchers to maximise the collaborative and translational potential of their research.
