Research Student Workshops

The Translational Health Research Institute runs workshops covering a diverse range of topics for HDR students.

Workshops are typically held in the ‘Downstairs Bunker’ 3.G.11, Building 3, Campbelltown Campus, Western Sydney University.

THRI Honours Student Workshops

All students are expected to attend and will be required to sign an attendance sheet. Please email the workshop facilitator (and cc your supervisor) if you are unable to attend a workshop due to illness or other unforeseen event.

18th Feb

Orientation and introduction to developing your thesis project

Students will be introduced to the lab environment at THRI and their project areas. The workshop will also discuss how to develop a research question based on your allocated project and review of the literature.

Ethical considerations and recruitment strategies

The workshop will cover ethical principles when researching marginalised populations and sensitive health topics. It will also cover practical procedures and knowledge for recruiting online through social media as well as through community and health settings.

Qualitative interviewing techniques

This workshop will provide an introduction to the craft of designing and conducting qualitative interviews. Students will have a chance to trial practical interview skills in the workshop, with particular consideration of working with sensitive topics.

This workshop will cover what reflexivity is, and what it means to do reflexivity in research.

Doing qualitative analysis – coding your data

This workshop will cover the initial stages of coding data as part of conducting a qualitative analysis.

Facilitator: Prof Jane Ussher (j.ussher@westernsydney.edu.au)

Preparation: All qualitative data needs to be collected and interviews transcribed by this date.

Who is the workshop for? All students doing qualitative analysis.

Doing qualitative analysis – developing themes from coded data

This workshop will cover the development of ‘bigger picture’ themes as part of the later stages of conducting a qualitative analysis.
