Penny Abbott awarded Churchill fellowship
Congratulations to SOM/THRI’s Dr Penny Abbott for her recent award of a Churchill fellowship to research access to primary health care for people in contact with the criminal justice system.
Penny will travel to the USA and Canada in 2019, and engage with community-based primary healthcare organisations, prison health services, re-entry health programs and workforce educators. She will seek innovations and evidenced strategies which build the capacity of primary care to provide effective care for people struggling with addictions or cycling imprisonment.
This will build on her recently completed PhD into health care access for women leaving prison and her longstanding contributions and advocacy for the wellbeing of people in contact with the criminal justice system through general practice and the prison health sector.
