Emotion processing and attention

This project investigates the ability to process different types of emotion (e.g., angry, disgust, sad, fear, surprise, happy) expressed via the face.

Accurate detection of facial expressions is important for interpersonal communication as well as for detecting threats in the environment.

Emotion in faces can be accurately identified when we are looking directly at the face. However, it is not clear whether accurate emotion recognition can be achieved when the face is not attended.

We utilise unique methods to ascertain whether spatial attention is a necessary component of emotion processing.
