Biography

Jerome Sarris is Professor of Integrative Mental Health at the NICM Health Research Institute at Western Sydney University in Westmead, in addition to an honorary position at the University of Melbourne, Florey Institute of Neuroscience and Mental Health. Jerome moved from clinical practice to academic work, and completed a doctorate at the field of psychiatry. He has a particular interest in mood and anxiety disorder research pertaining to psychotropic plant medicines (in particular psychedelic medicines, cannabinoids, and kava), lifestyle medicine within an integrated model, and psychopharmacology. His research also utilises genomic technology to examine the pharmacogenomics of individual responses to the treatment of psychiatric disorders.

Professor Sarris has over 230 publications with an H-Index of 55 (cited over 13,000 times), has published in many eminent psychiatry journals including The American Journal of Psychiatry, Lancet Psychiatry, JAMA Psychiatry, and World Psychiatry and has a combined Altmetrics score of over 9500. He has been co-awarded over $25 million dollars of research or fellowship funding, and is currently involved in over a dozen clinical trials in the area of mental health, being a recent Chief-Investigator A on 6 NHMRC/MRFF fellowships or multicentre project grants in the field. Prof Sarris is rated as a 'World Expert' on Expertscape in the fields of plant-based medicines, anti-anxiety agents, and depression research, and was recently awarded the accolade of being one of Australia’s Top 250 researchers (‘The Australian’ 2023 Research Awards), and the field leader within Natural Medicines & Medicinal Plants within the Health and Medical Research domain.
