Biography

Jan is located with the School of Social Sciences and Psychology. She was professor of Social Work from 1995 to 2009. She was founding director and then a member of the UWS Social Justice and Social Change Research Centre. Jan’s employment prior to her university career was in various practice and management positions in the (then) NSW Child Welfare Department (later, NSW Department of Community Services). This work informed her areas of concern as an academic. Her research focuses on linking theory, policy and practice on children’s issues, through collaborative work with major children’s agencies in New South Wales and with Australian and overseas academics. She has researched and published on child welfare and protection, child and family policy, child-adult relations, children’s needs in care, children's well-being and researching with children. Her particular interest is in facilitating children’s participation in research and in practice and policy development on issues concerning them. Jan is currently a member of the Board of the International Society for Child Indicators (ISCI) and Expert Adviser to the research project, 'Children’s Understandings of Well-being: Global and Local Contexts'.
