Doctor Suzanne Grant

Senior Research Fellow - Integrative Oncology,
NICM Health Research Institute

Biography

Dr Grant is a Senior Research Fellow Western Sydney University (WSU). She holds a joint position in research at the National Institute of Complementary Medicine (NICM) and the Chris O'Brien Lifehouse, a major cancer hospital in Sydney.  She is currently investigating options and outcomes in integrative oncology, and integrative health care.

As a Senior Research Fellow, Dr Grant's research focus is on investigations and clinical trials that answer practical questions, including: Are patient outcomes improved with co-management by different provider types? What model of care best serves people with cancer? What is the best research design to understand the effectiveness of Chinese medicine in the treatment of people with cancer and other chronic diseases? What aspects of care matter most to patients? Information gained in these and other studies needs then to be translated into knowledge that improves patient care, policy guidelines, access and reimbursement.

Her current work is as the Integrative Oncology and TCM Lead, Western Sydney Integrative Healthcare centre at Westmead; and conducting joint clinical Integrative Oncology research between NICM and the Chris O'Brien Lifehouse.

Her professional goal is to facilitate the pragmatic use of research to inform clinical practice and shape public health policy on traditional, complementary and integrative medicine. In clinical practice, I seek to achieve the best individual patient health outcomes through ongoing development and the implementation of emerging evidence.

Dr Grant has been an invited speaker at international forums including International Society for Complementary Medicine Reseach (2015, 2018, 2019), Clinical Oncology Society of Australia (COSA), 2017; Integrative Oncology Symposium, Perth, 2017 [Invited Keynote Speaker]; European Congress for Integrative Medicine, Global Summit on Integrative Medicine and Healthcare, Denmark, 2015 [Invited Speaker]. She is a temporary advisor to the WHO SEARO and was an invited speaker at the SEARO traditional medicine group meeting in Jamnagar, India 2019.

Dr Grant is an Editorial Board Member of the Integrative Cancer Therapies journal and peer reviews for BMC Complementary Therapies, European Journal of Integrative Medicine, Evidence Based Complementary and Alternative Medicine and the Journal of Complementary and Integrative Medicine. She was a technical advisor to the Standards Australia Committees and Joint Standards Australia/Standards New Zealand Committee: ISO Working Group Traditional Chinese Medicine 2013-2016.  She is an appointed member of the COSA Integrative Medicines Executive Group and a member of the Western Sydney University External Advisory Committee for Chinese medicine programs.

She has practised Chinese medicine in an integrative medical centre setting for over 15 years.  I am currently the Senior Acupuncturist at the Chris O'Brien Lifehouse Comprehensive Cancer Hosptital.
