Biography

Jing Han received her PhD degree in English literature from The University of Sydney in 1995. She completed her MA in English literary criticism from Beijing Foreign Studies University in 1986. She received her Bachelor in English Language and Literature in 1981 from Lanzhou University.

Dr Han joined the Australian public broadcaster, SBS TV in 1996 and she is now the Head of  SBS Subtitling Department, renowned for its subtitle quality and standard. Over the last 23 years, she has solely subtitled and been individually credited for the English versions of over 200 major Chinese films and documentaries broadcast on SBS channels including Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon, Hero, I'm Not Madam Bovary, The Banquet, Crazy Stone, Not One Less, The Road Home, Under the Hawthorn Tree, Forever Enthralled, Aftershock, Crazy Racer, Lust, Caution, Let the Bullet Fly, The Assembly, The Curse of Golden Flower, Blind Shaft, Beijing Bicycle, Together, Springtime in A Small Town, The Blue Kite etc. In the last six years, Dr Han has been the leading subtitler of the most popular Chinese TV show If You Are The One, which has created a cult following in Australian audiences and set the record of the longest showing non-English series in Australian broadcasting history. Dr Han has subtitled close to 400 episodes of the show and has also subtitled The Handmaid’s Tale Season One, Season Two and Season Three and several other TV series into Chinese.

As a leading expert in subtitling, intercultural communications and translating Chinese culture, Dr Han has presented frequently at conferences nationally and internationally. She has been invited to give lectures at over 30 universities in the mainland China, Taiwan, Europe and in Australia. In 2018, to acknowledge her outstanding contributions to the cultural exchange between Australia and China, Dr Han was selected by theAustralian government to be included in the 45 Stories to commemorate the 45th anniversay of Australia and China diplomatic relations. Since 2018, she has been leading the production of the English edition of 100-episode series A History of China commissioned by CGTV China. Dr Han is the translator of a modern Chinese classic Educated Youth (Nie Zhai) by multi-award winning author Ye Xin, published by Giramondo Publishing Australia in 2016.

Dr Han joined Western Sydney University in 2006 and has been a key member of the University's well-established Interpreting and Translation program. She has designed and taught a range of translation and interpreting courses including Audiovisual Translation, Literary Translation, Accreditation Studies, Legal Interpreting, Medical Interpreting, Specialised Translation and Introduction to Translation, Interpreting Skills and Community Translation. She is a HDR supervisor, currently supervising four PhD candidates and two Masters of Research students. She has been appointed the adjunct professorship at Xi’an Jaotong University, Fuzhou University, Shenyang Normal University, Jishou University and China East Jiaotong University. As the Associate Dean for International at School of Humanities and Communication, Dr Han has been responsible for developing partnerships with universities in mainland China, Taiwan and Europe in teaching, researches, joint degree programs and other types of collaborative programs and activities.
