Doctor Jerry Zhou

Doctor Jerry Zhou

Postdoctoral Research Fellow in Translational Gastroenterology,
School of Medicine

Biography

Dr Jerry Zhou has over 10 years of experience in translational research. His PhD at University of Sydney involved the development of a "lab-on-a chip" with USYD spin-off company Medsaic. Dr Zhou joined Western Sydney University, School of Medicine, in February of 2014 as a postdoctoral research fellow to work in translational gastroenterology. The laboratory, under his management, has grown to produce internationally recognised research on gut microbiome, gastrointestinal motility, nutrition and dietetics, and regenerative therapy as well as collaborations with research teams at John Hunter Hospital, Swinburne University, University of New South Wales, and University of Technology Sydney.

Dr Jerry Zhou is a clinical research fellow at gastrointestinal physiology clinics in the Greater Western Sydney region (at Blacktown and Camden Hospitals). The clinical experience has bridged the divide between clinical and basic science, creating relevant research questions and the translation of research outcomes back into clinical practice.

The Gut Motility Network has grown to incorporate community engagement and promotion of gut motility disorders as core themes. Dr Zhou has established partnerships with advocacy groups Rotary Health Australia, Rotary Devonport and Oesopahgeal Cancer Awareness Group Inc. (OCAGI). He also created and manages university-affiliated website (https://www.westernsydney.edu.au/gimotility) and a patient advocacy group Gastroparesis Australia (http://www.gastroparesisaustralia.com/).

Dr Zhou leads the team in MedTech development, his an active member of National Smart Sensing Network (NSSN) and Health, Education, Research and Enterprise (SPHERE). He completed the Cicada Innovation/NSW Health Medical Device Commercialisation Training Program, winning Product Development Award and People’s Choice Award. He is the inventor and patent holder of In & Out Trainer (an at home anorectal biofeedback therapy device) and nano-endoscopy (an oesophageal cancer screening system). Dr Zhou has successfully securing several competitive grants, philanthropic and industry funding for the commercialisation of these technologies.
