Dr Tan’s area of research is mostly concentrated on the behaviour and strength of composite steel-concrete structures subjected to combined loading actions such as axial, shear, flexure and torsion. These forms of structures can be found in highways, bridges and high-rise buildings. Therefore, by using both experimental testing and finite element modelling, design models and guidelines can be proposed to improve the existing Australian Standards for composite steel-concrete structures. In addition, Dr Tan has developed interests in the design of semi-continuous composite steel-concrete beams, which are commonly found in all frame systems. These semi-continuous beams consist of continuous beams connected by a semi-rigid composite joint such as a flush end-plate connection.
