Biography

Dr. Dharmappa (Dharma) Hagare is a Senior Lecturer in Environmental, Sustainability and Risk Engineering in the School of Engineering. Dharma has over 15 years of academic and 5 years of industrial experience in a wide variety of areas of Civil and Environmental Engineering. Dharma has published over 100 journal, conference and seminar papers, technical reports and book chapters. Also, received an award for best technical paper. Dharma developed several e-resources to teach and train students and professionals in Environmental Engineering. He lead a multi-disciplinary team to develop ?H2O ? Multimedia Package? for teaching undergraduate and postgraduate students in water and wastewater engineering. Also, developed a computer program "WATOPT" for optimal design and simulation of water treatment plants. Dharma successfully managed several projects related to design, construction and operation of water and wastewater treatment plants. Also, Dharma successfully completed several Risk Assessment and Management projects including Environmental Management Plans for Mines and use of Recycled Water.

Research

I have over 25 years of academic and industry experience in the areas of Civil/ Agricultural/ Environmental Egnineering. My research areas include:

  • Use of recycled wastewater. 
  • Sustainable water and nutrient management in dairy, agriculture and horticulture industries.
  • Use of organic fertiliser in agriculture industry.
  • Urban and peri-urban water cycle management.
  • Energy conservation in buildings.
  • Energy recovery and recycling of waste materials.
  • Life cycle analysis (LCA); Sustainability & Liveability indices

I have received over $1 million in research funding. Majority of this funding has come from industries. I have successfully completed a number of major industry sponsored projects involving several academic, research and technical staff.
