Biography

Dr. Dharmappa (Dharma) Hagare is a Senior Lecturer in Sustainability Engineering in the School of Engineering. He has over 25 years of academic and 5 years of industrial experience in a wide variety of areas of Civil and Environmental Engineering. He has published about 200 journal and conference papers, technical reports and book chapters.His main areas of research include water, nutrients and materials recycling. He is currently leading research in the areas of recycled water for irrigation, reuse of water and nutrients within dairy industries and urban stormwater management. He has so far graduated 13 PhD and 7 MPhil students. He has successfully managed several projects related to design, construction and operation of water and wastewater treatment plants. Also, he has successfully completed several Risk Assessment and Management projects including Environmental Management Plans for Mines and use of Recycled Water. He has received over $2.8 million in research funding.

I have over 30 years of academic and industry experience in the areas of Sustainability/ Environmental Engineering.

I am currently leading Nutrient, Energy, Water and Materials Recycling Group (NEWMARG). My current research areas include:

Use of recycled wastewater for urban irrigation and agriculture.
Stormwater harvesting, treatment and reuse.
Sustainable water and nutrient management in dairy, agriculture and horticulture industries.
Use of organic fertiliser in agriculture industry.
Organic waste recycling for producing energy, fertilisers and new materials.
Recycling of waste materials for producing new construction materials.
Life cycle analysis (LCA); Sustainability & Liveability indices.

I have received over $2.8 million in research funding. Majority of this funding has come from industries. I have close working relationship with several industries. I have successfully completed several major industry sponsored projects in collaboration with several academic, research and technical staff.
