My program of research can be summarized into understanding how we can best optimize and deliver exercise programs for people with chronic health conditions, particularly chronic low back pain, and to examine mechanisms of adaptation following different types of exercise.  My specific expertise relates to 1) designing and testing effective exercise programs for rehabilitation, injury prevention, and performance, 2) measuring the acute and chronic physiological responses to different types of exercise, 3) exploring central and peripheral fatigue mechanisms during exercise and activities of daily living.

Research highlights include my pioneering use of surface EMG to examine deep abdominal muscle motor control, the examination of trunk motor control adaptation following exercise based clinical trials in back pain patients, and the first study to suggest central but not peripheral fatigue of the hamstring muscles during a soccer match simulation may be a predisposing factor for injury risk.
