Biography

Professor Zhong Tao obtained his PhD from Harbin Institute of Technology in 2001. He is currently Theme Director of Materials at the Centre for Infrastructure Engineering, Western Sydney University. Professor Tao was a former ARC Future Fellow (2010-2014). Before he joined the Western Sydney University in 2007, he held a position of Professor of Structural Engineering at Fuzhou University, China.

Professor Tao has a research background in the areas of construction materials, steel-concrete composite structures and structural fire engineering. He has in excess of 300 publications (including two books and over 170 referred journal papers) with a Scopus h-index of 45 and a Google Scholar h-index of 51. Over 95% of his international journal papers were published in journals with SJR of Q1 (Top Quartile). He has been successful in attracting competitive research grants, including 7 ARC grants (one ARC Future Fellowship Grant, three ARC Discovery Grants, one ARC Linkage Grant, one ARC Industrial Transformation Research Hub project, and one ARC Linkage Infrastructure Grant), 1 ACRUP project and 2 NSFC grants. He has supervised or co-supervised 26 PhD students to completion. Professor Tao has been a major player in technology transfer, through his role in drafting design codes. He has played an important role in drafting seven design codes on steel-concrete composite structures. Professor Tao has received numerous awards and prizes for his contributions to the research and development of steel-concrete composite construction. Since 2006, Professor Tao has been invited 10 times to deliver keynote lectures on various international conferences. He has also served as a member of International Scientific Committees for over 30 international conferences.

Professor Tao is the Specialty Chief Editor of the Fire Resistant Engineering section in Frontiers in Built Environment. He is also on the editorial board of two other journals (Thin-Walled Structures, Steel and Composite Structures). He has acted as a referee for grants applied for from the ARC, Czech Science Foundation, National Natural Science Foundation of China, the Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council in the UK, Swedish Knowledge Foundation, and New Zealand MBIE. He currently serves on the College of Experts of the Australian Research Council and is a member of the College of Assessors of the New Zealand Ministry of Business, Innovation & Employment (MBIE).

Title: Solar tile with passive cooling
Description: Researchers built the device by attaching 17%-efficient monocrystalline PV cells to a mortar roof tile that was doped with a phase-change material (PCM). The PCM solar tile provided 4.1% more power than the PV tile with no cooling agent in the winter, and 2.2% to 4.3% more during the summer.

Description: Despite being such a sunkissed country, Australia is still lagging behind in the race to embrace solar power. While solar panels adorn hundreds of thousands of rooftops throughout the nation, we have not yet seen the logical next step: buildings with solar photovoltaic cells as an integral part of their structure. Our lab is hoping to change that. We have developed solar roof tiles with solar cells integrated on their surface using a specially customised adhesive.
