Susanne's research spans diverse topics and a broad range of qualitative methodologies. She has contributed to the development of innovative methods including collective biography or memory work, autoethnography, poetic and narrative inquiry and has written extensively on poststructural and feminist theories and their methodological implications. She takes up cultural studies and discourse analytic approaches to analyse all sorts of texts including feature and documentary film and television, advertisements, newspapers, theatre texts, YA and children's fiction and information texts, and educational policy. In some of her most recent work she explores the implications of new materialist and affect theories in educational research. She currently leads an ARC Discovery grant Gender Matters: Changing policy and practices in Australian secondary schools and has been a CI on two previous Australian competitive research grants: ARC Discovery Enabling place pedagogies in rural and urban Australia and ARC Linkage From high school to higher education: Gendered pathways in information, communication and computer technology education.

In the last five years her funded research and consultancies with a range of collaborators have included Impacts of Poetry in Action in secondary schools (with PIA); and Evaluation of the Widening Participation Student Ambassadors Initiative (HEPP). Projects with the Department of Education NSW have included Action Learning for Innovation, Understanding the experience and perceived experience of RAW: Ready Arrive Work, and projects focusing on quality outcomes through pedagogical reform. She is currently working as an academic partner with the NSW Department of Education in the Writing in Secondary initiative and the HSC Quality Teaching Strategy.

Additional current research is a parallel Australian study with Danish researchers (Aarhus University) into Youth in the Time of Coronavirus, and the large international project led by Finnish researchers (Unieversity of Tampere) Reconnect / Recollect: Crossing the Divides through Memories of Cold War Childhoods. Susanne has also undertaken a recent study across two states examining Teaching Writing in the NAPLAN era, in partnership with the Australian Association of Teachers of English.
