Biography

Professor Singh’s teaching and research focuses on three interrelated fields:

Post-monolingual intercultural self-confidence: Through his teaching and research Professor Singh explores the epistemological influence of Asian intellectual cultures and languages on the internationalisation of Higher Degree Research Education in English-medium universities. Specifically, through working with Higher Degree Researchers (Masters and PhDs) interested in the educational uses of their full linguistic repertoire and translanguaging strategies, Professor Singh focuses on the co-production of evidence, concepts and reasons that give warrant to using other languages to advance knowledge of critical thinking and theorising. His research into post-monolingual intercultural self-confidence informs his teaching of English for Research Publication Purposes, and Content Languages Integrated Learning.

Education Policy Practices and Global Knowledge Production: In the Master of Education (Leadership), Professor Singh teaches the Unit 102160 Education Policy Practices and Global Knowledge Production. Using the Australian Professional Standard for Principals and Leadership Profiles he explores the work of educational leaders in relation to the uncertain and challenging contexts presented by the rapidly changing and increasing interdependence of people, economies and environments. Unit 102160 provides educational leaders evidence-based accounts of educational developments beyond the usual global and national sources to explore the interplay of the local, national and international knowledge and the interconnected uses of this knowledge in their work/life trajectories. Informed by the study, Leaders Closing the Gap in Youth Attainment and Transitions, this Unit explores a capability approach to leading teachers and students’ learning through leaders’ brokering young adults’ learning and earning through school-to-work transitions. This Unit draws on Teaching and Leading for Quality Australian Schools: A Review and Synthesis of Research-Based Knowledge for research-based knowledge, including evidence of the changing local/global context of school leadership and the consequences for precarious employment, work disorganization, and occupational health.

Great Teaching for the Inspired Learning of Chinese: Given the importance of universities having a "strong and enduring partnerships with schools," Professor Singh established the basis for a long-term partnership (2006- continuing) between the New South Wales Department of Education, primary and secondary schools across Sydney, the Ningbo Municipal Education Bureau (China), and the University of Western Sydney. In acknowledging that "high performing systems build into their teaching degrees and career professional development a requirement for rigorous and continuous research," he designed a Higher Degree Research program (MEd Hons; PhD) to provide professional learning for emerging teacher-researchers to develop their capabilities for making Chinese learnable for largely monolingual English-speaking students in primary and secondary schools. The resulting ROSETE Model is framed by the integration of service work, education and research for professional learning.

For busy teachers and academics experiencing problems in Chinese language education, international education and, marrying education and work, Professor Singh’s work contributes to a range of practical ideas. He does this through his work in higher degree research education, the conduct of real-world research projects focuses and the dissemination of research-based knowledge on three interrelated questions.

How can we improve LANGUAGE EDUCATION to MAKE CHINESE LEARNABLE?

Professor Singh is researching the development, implementation and effects of professional teacher-researchers’ knowledge, practices and engagements strategies for making Chinese learnable for primary and secondary school students.

What can we usefully do to INTERNATIONALISE (DOCTORAL) EDUCATION?

Professor Singh is researching the development, implementation and effects of post-monolingual approaches to working with non-White, non-Western international, refugee, migrant and Indigenous research students interested in contributing to innovations in international/intercultural education, including Content and Language Integrated Learning or English Medium Instruction.

How might EDUCATION and WORK be better integrated?

Professor Singh is researching the development, implementation and effects of integrating education and work through having students and teachers engage with highly skilled workers in cutting edge industries.

Through reference to Professor Singh and Professor Bobby Harreveld (2014) co-authored research book, Deschooling L'earning: Young Adults and the New Spirit of Capitalism (London: Palgrave Macmillan) which explores how recent reforms to young adults' senior secondary schooling, Professor Singh uses an organisational change framework built around very practical ideas, see:
