Biography

 Dr Juan Francisco Salazar is an environmental and media anthropologist and documentary filmmaker. He is a Professor in the School of Humanities and Communication Arts and Fellow at the Institute for Culture and Society. He has been a University Research Theme Champion (Environment and Sustainability) since 2016. From 2020 he is an Australian Research Council Future Fellow.

Juan is best known for his substantive body of work and contribution to studies of indigenous media practices in Chile and Latin America. His current research and teaching is in the fields of social-environmental change; social studies of science; documentary film; futures and socio-technical imaginaries; and cultural research in Antarctica and Outer Space.

Juan has made several feature length documentary films exhibited internationally including Nightfall on Gaia (2015) and The Bamboo Bridge (2019). He has been a visiting fellow at Universidad de las Américas, Mexico (2006), the Institute of Development Studies, University of Sussex (2008), Universidad Uniminuto, Colombia (2013), Universidad de Valparaiso, Chile (2015) and Temple University (2018). In 2018 he was also an Ostrom Fellow at Indiana University (Bloomington). 

Juan was an international coordinator of the OURMedia Network from 2004 to 2017. Since 2010 he is a member of the Experts Group of the Humanities and Social Sciences Expert Group (HASSEG) of the Scientific Committee for Antarctic Research (SCAR) of which he was co-chair between 2012-2014. Since 2014 he is co-director of the Future Anthropologies Network of the European Association of Social Anthropologists (EASA).
