My research focus is on the Sociology of Religion and Change, and the central questions it addresses are:

-How do religion and spirituality affect sociocultural changes in late modernity?

-How does the constant pace of change in late modernity affect religion and spirituality?

-How do religion and spirituality provide stability and, vice versa, how can these be perceived as a source of instability and threat in late modernity?

This work is undertaken through 7 interrelated research streams: 1- New Religious Movements and Alternative Spiritualities; 2- Religion and Social Theory; 3- Religion, Deviance and Law; 4- New Religious Migrant Groups; 5-Religion and Popular Culture; 6- Muslim Communities in Secular Societies; and 7- Creative Works with Religious Themes.

As a Sociologist following a Weberian approach, I research the social meaning that movements and individuals give to their actions, and the effects of these meanings and actions on the sociocultural structure of Western Societies. As a Public Sociologist, my work is firstly to translate the multitude of ways in which social actors think and act and secondly, to disseminate my interpretations to the broader community through publications and engagement with the media. By disseminating my work and findings as widely as possible, it is my intention to contribute to the study and promotion of religious diversity.
