Biography

Winston is an academic GP, and is involved in teaching across the 5 years of the WSU MD program.

Winston joined WSU in 2017, having previously worked with medical schools at UNSW, University of Sydney and University of Newcastle. He has also worked in academic roles with RACGP NSW/ACT Faculty, GP Synergy and the Black Dog Institute.

Winston has experience in teaching undergraduate students in the disciplines of primary care and public health, and re-designed curriculum and blended learning activities. He has provided clinical supervision and training for junior medical officers, GP registrars and students enrolled in nursing and allied health.

Winston was awarded 2 teaching prizes by UNSW in 2014 (UNSW Medicine Learning & Teaching Award for Outstanding Contributions to Student Learning; SPHCM Alan Hodgkinson Prize for Outstanding Contribution to Teaching and Student Learning).

Winston’s research interests include refugee health, Aboriginal health, primary care, the health of doctors and medical students, mental health and medical education. Winston was awarded the 2009 RACGP/Centre of National Research on Disability and Rehabilitation Medicine Research (CONROD) Fellowship.

Winston’s clinical interests relate to vulnerable communities, with his current work for Karitane caring for post-natal mothers; the NSW Refugee Health Service caring for refugees and asylum seekers; and Justice Health caring for prison inmates.

Outside of work, Winston enjoys spending time with his wife and 2 young children, along with creative arts including singing in a band.

Winston's work days with WSU are Tuesdays and Fridays.
